Sikkim Divyang Sahayata Samiti,Gangtok Sikkim

Sikkim Divyang Sahayata Samiti, previously known as Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti, was established in 1999 and officially recognized by the Government of Sikkim in January 2001. It began its noble mission on February 28, 2001, by crafting and fitting artificial limbs, especially the respected “Jaipur Foot,” in the serene surroundings of Ranipool, nestled in Gangtok.

Since its inception, the focus of Sikkim Divyang Sahayata Samiti has been to improve the lives of individuals facing physical challenges. The origins of this commendable effort trace back to 1986 when Miss Draupadi Ghimiray, a dedicated nurse at STNM Hospital in Gangtok, took it upon herself to assist differently-abled people on trips to distant cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Jaipur. Her goal was to help them acquire and fit artificial limbs.

Through Miss Ghimiray’s dedicated efforts, a workshop was established in Ranipool, providing a space for the meticulous process of fitting artificial limbs. In 2004, the organization’s administrative and workshop facilities were relocated to Zero Point, a significant move that marked the start of an unwavering commitment to crafting and installing artificial limbs for those in need.

The skilled technicians at the organization have played a crucial role in crafting these aids, giving recipients a newfound sense of mobility and confidence. However, the efforts of Sikkim Divyang Sahayata Samiti extend beyond technical aspects. The compassionate members of this selfless group conduct thorough surveys across rural and urban Sikkim, seeking out individuals whose unique challenges might otherwise go unnoticed.

These surveys form the foundation for organizing outreach camps designed to provide assistance to those identified as needing help. In 2006, a significant step was taken as the organization introduced lightweight calipers, an initiative inaugurated by the esteemed former President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Azad. This initiative brought solace and empowerment to even polio patients.

Beyond physical aids, Sikkim Divyang Sahayata Samiti extends its benevolent influence to livelihood generation. The organization imparts specialized training to individuals with unique challenges, equipping them with skills for gainful employment. Furthermore, the institution plays a vital role in facilitating various aspects of life for the physically challenged, including education, employment opportunities, financial assistance, housing provisions through the Indira Awas Yojana, and more.

The success of this noble effort is not achieved in isolation. Various government departments cooperate to ensure the smooth execution of the Samiti’s mission, reflecting a collective commitment to uplifting those whose spirits may be dampened by physical limitations.

In conclusion, Sikkim Divyang Sahayata Samiti stands as a beacon of compassion, determination, and transformative change. Its profound impact resonates through the lives of those it serves, offering them the gifts of mobility, empowerment, and an enriched existence, all orchestrated through the symphony of benevolence and humanity.
